Head Injury / Brain Injury

The different kinds of head and brain injury

There are two main types of head injury or brain injury we see here at Burscough Neuro Physiotherapy Rehabilitation Centre.

One is known as traumatic brain injury (TBI) which is an injury to the brain caused by trauma to the head (head injury). There can be many causes, including road traffic accidents, assaults, falls and other accidents at home or work.

The other is known as acquired brain injury which covers all cases of brain injury occurring after birth. The term includes traumatic brain injury as well as conditions such as brain tumour, stroke, brain haemorrhage, and encephalitis.

Both are very traumatic and can have a massive impact, not only on the patient’s lives but also on their family and friends.

Head and brain injuries can leave people with significant physical, cognitive and behavioural problems and they often need considerable help and support to regain independence and improve their quality of life.

Symptoms of a head or brain injury

The brain controls all of our functions so people who suffer an injury to the brain can face many physical and cognitive problems. These may include:

  • Weakness or paralysis often down one side of the body
  • Lack of co-ordination of the legs and arms
  • Muscle weakness and stiff joints
  • Muscle spasms and spasticity
  • Difficulty standing up, balancing and moving
  • Trouble walking
  • Risk of falling
  • Problems eating and drinking
  • Fatigue
  • Depression and low mood often caused by the loss of mobility and independence

How Burscough Neuro Physiotherapy can help recovery following a brain injury

Due to neuroplasticity – the brain has the ability to reorganise itself by forming new neural connections helped by targeted physiotherapy. With the right input and experiences, the brain has an incredible ability to rewire new connections following injury which can greatly help recovery.

Everyone who has suffered a head or brain injury has different medical and physiotherapy needs. During our initial assessment, we will carry out a full individual assessment looking at all aspects of the brain injury and its effects on daily life.

Our specialist neuro physiotherapists aim to:

  • Strengthen weakened muscles
  • Reduce muscle spasms and spasticity
  • Improve posture both sitting and standing
  • Help to overcome difficulties with everyday activities such as walking
  • Recover essential movements such as sitting to standing or turning over in bed
  • Improve balance and reduce the risk of falling
  • Help manage pain
  • Source any specialist equipment you may need
  • Encourage maximum independence

It’s important that rehabilitation and, in particular, neuro physiotherapy should begin as soon as possible to maximise recovery after a head or brain injury.

At Burscough Neuro Physiotherapy we have been treating people who have suffered head and brain injuries for more than 30 years. We strongly believe that the vast majority of individuals following a brain injury can continue to make improvements for many months and years following the initial injury.
