What is a Stroke?

A stroke, also known as a cerebrovascular accident (CVA), occurs when the blood supply to the brain is interrupted. This can happen due to:

• Ischaemic Stroke: Caused by a blood clot blocking blood flow to the brain.
• Haemorrhagic Stroke: Caused by bleeding in the brain due to a ruptured blood vessel.

Each stroke is unique and can cause mild or severe damage to the brain, affecting the body, emotions, and communication abilities.

A Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA), or mini-stroke, is a temporary interruption in blood flow to the brain. Unlike a stroke, TIA symptoms resolve within 24 hours, but it still requires medical attention.

Common Stroke Symptoms

The effects of a stroke vary depending on the part of the brain affected. Common symptoms in stroke survivors include:

Physical Symptoms

• Weakness or Paralysis: Often affects one side of the body.
• Sensation Changes: Numbness, pins and needles, or altered touch sensitivity.
• Difficulty Standing or Balancing: Increased risk of falls and reduced confidence.
• Walking Difficulties: Reduced mobility due to weakness or coordination issues.
• Muscle Tightness: Spasticity or contractures can limit movement.

Other Common Effects

• Post-Stroke Pain: Often concentrated in the shoulder.
• Speech and Communication Changes: Difficulty speaking or understanding language.
• Problems with Eating and Drinking: Swallowing difficulties (dysphagia).
• Post-Stroke Fatigue: Extreme tiredness even after minimal effort.
• Depression and Low Mood: Emotional changes due to the impact of the stroke.

How Does Stroke Recovery Work?

The brain’s ability to recover after a stroke is due to a process called neuroplasticity. Neuroplasticity allows the brain to re-wire itself by forming new connections, enabling other parts of the brain to take over lost functions.

This recovery process begins immediately after the stroke and can continue for months or even years with the right rehabilitation. Early and consistent intervention, particularly with neuro physiotherapy, is essential to maximise recovery.

Found out about Burscough Neuro Physiotherapy on a recommendation from my GP because I was still waiting on Physio from Walton Neuro after 8 months from discharge.Has an assessment done by Jack he was very professional and friendly and was impressed by his knowledge diagnosed my BSS with in minutes I have seen the same Physio each time which is great to build up your trust and being comfortable with the same person I have been lucky to have Terri as my physio best described asknowledgeable ,Compassionate ,someone you can have a laugh with but doesn't let you away with anything :).The reception staff sorry have forgot their names ALWAYS friendly nothing to much finally the clinic is spotless and very well equipped

From day 1, they make you feel very relaxed and important. Jack, the owner, came to my house to do the initial assessment. He was great. He spent time with me and told me he would get me walking again, and they have. Now I can get to the surgery, even better. Sam on reception is great, and coffee and biscuits are always provided before I start. Also I have met some lovely people in the waiting area. This all adds to a great experience. Cath has been my physio now since September 23, and she is brill she has got me moving so much more and built my confidence up so much. She's also been a good listener. I hada stroke and was bed bound for months and never thought I would get where I am today, so I couldn't recommend this place enough. Thank you, Burscough nuro physio.

I have worked with three staff at Burscough Neuro Physiotherapy, all of whom have been excellent: clearly experienced and well qualified; able to give good advice and hands-on therapy and to suggest an exercise regime that is 'do-able'. Currently I am working with Emma who comes to my house as I am not able to drive. She is friendly and helpful in all of the ways described above. I wholeheartedly recommend this practice.

Came to see Jack yesterday with a vestibular problem, we undertook some excersises and by the time I left I felt better. He helped with the anxiety I was feeling with this condition and it will improve.Highly recommended

We had a wonderful assessment of my mother in law carried out today to see if she had the physical ability to come home. The physio asked loads of questions and put my m.i.l. through her paces, being gentle and firm and always looking after her safety. Can’t recommend them enough.

I’ve only been going here for 5 weeks and the difference in my arm is unbelievable! 6 weeks ago I would struggle to lift a bag of sugar above my head, now however I can lift 15kg with ease. My physio is Dannica, she is fantastic!!! She went to the gym with me and devised a program to help me get fitter and stronger. Everyone here is so friendly and easy to talk to. Jack and the team are brilliant 🤩!!!

What a fabulous team: professional, caring and thoughtful. My 91 year old Mum has benefitted from the expertise of Jack, Dulcie, Vicki and Dannica, who have all been involved in helping her to walk again, after she had a fall and hip operation. Mum has regained her confidence and is able to move around her care home with an assistant. Not only that, she enjoys being able to go out for day trips with her family.None of this seemed remotely possible back in March of this year. The clinic was very well presented, clean and tidy!The team were all friendly and welcoming when I arrived before my grandad!Upon my grandads arrival they were very welcoming towards my grandad who is the reason that we were there!The Neuro Physiotherapists Jack and Dulcie were both extremely welcoming towards my grandad, nan, myself and the nurse (we had to have a nurse due to grandad having a tracheostomy).Since my grandad is possibly one of the most complex patients I know due to a multitude of things, they were absolutely amazing with grandad, very understanding of his situation and worked on grandad with an assessment! Both Jack and Dulcie were patient and listened to what we had to say about grandad!The assessment overall was a positive one and ultimately proved what I have been saying for so long!Why I didn’t find these guys sooner I will never know.I do hope that we are able to get grandad back to these guys for them to work closer with grandad in setting him some realistic and achievable goals with a long term goal to get him walking again and back home where he belongs!Thank you both on behalf of my grandad Alan and myself and my nan!

Burscough Neuro have changed my life for the better. The manager of this facility is amazing, he supported me with getting the specialist funding I desperately needed to support my physical mobilility and pain management as I have cerebral palsy. I now have physiotherapy with this practice regularly and I've come on leaps and bounds since. I was on strong painkillers for a Lumbar curve in my spine which is now so much better that I am now longer on the pain relief. These people really care about individual patient welfare and it’s never just been about money with them.Today for the first time in years I've managed to stand on my own independently. I contacted the centre as I needed someone to support my elderly mother following an extended period of illness & hospitalisation during which she had lost much of her mobility & confidence. The initial contact was responded to in a prompt manner & Jack, who carried out the assessment, was like a breath of positive fresh air. Since then Mum's sessions have been carried out by Terri. She is an absolute godsend who has begun to restore not just Mum's mobility but also her confidence. She is an asset to the company, an absolute gem.

I reached out as my hubby had a stroke. Today he had his 90 min assessment by Jack all I can say is wow and thankyou so much Jack went through absolutely everything explained thing to us in a way we could understand gave us so much advice on how hubby and me can help ourselves. We are now going to get a physio routine going to help hubby get the best life he can. So so professional hubby is nervous around everyone after his stroke but totally felt at ease with Jack. I cannot recommend Burscough Physiotherapy highly enough. The whole team are professional, empathetic and extremely supportive. It is not just anassessment, and a list of exercises It is hands on physio done with a thorough clinical understanding of Neuro issues.I have found Jack to be very caring, encouraging and patient. He listens to my concerns, explains things clearly and uses his clinical skill to help reduce stiffness and pain. I am able to phone him with any concerns .Overall - Fantastic!! 6 stars. Thank you

I was diagnosed with young onset Parkinson’s disease a year ago and my life fell apart. Fortunately someone recommended Burscough to me and everything changed for the better. I’ve been going every other week since then and I rely on Burscough to keep me moving, fit and healthy. Sarah is my neurophysiotherapist and she’s amazing. She’s highly experienced in PD and knows just what to do each week to help me to cope. She doesn’t just treat my rigidity and pain; she listens to me patiently and with understanding and together we come up with strategies to help me live my life well. All the staff are welcoming and supportive. I live an hour away but it’s well worth the drive. I tried another neurophysiotherapy service more local to me before I came to Burscough and there’s no comparison.

Took our son with special needs to see Jack to help advise and assess and activities etc that would be of benefit to him. Everybody was extremely friendly and professional Jack was very good with our son and made the whole process for him enjoyable. He explained.everything full to both us and Lewis and made the examination seem like a game so our son would engage as best as he could. We received a detailed report the same day. Excellent service would definitely use again and recommend to others

My husband Paul has recently had physio from Dulcie after two spinal ops she was very professional as were all the staff - Jack came to our house and took an extensive medical history before any treatment commenced - all the physio he received was at home and it was tailored to fit his needs he responded really well I would recommend this physio clinic to anyone needing neurophysiotherapy and wouldn’t hesitate to use them again in the future.
