Ruth’s Post Stroke Recovery Story

Ruth’s Post Stroke Recovery Story

Ruth’s Post Stroke Recovery Story

At 61, Ruth was an active part-time accountant and passionate golfer, a proud member of Hillside Golf Club, working hard to lower her handicap into single figures. However, her life changed dramatically in January 2020 when she suffered a stroke.

“On Monday, I was fit and well. By that evening, I’d had my stroke, and by Tuesday, I was bedbound. My right leg and arm were useless, and my speech was affected. For about five weeks, I had to be hoisted out of bed.”

Early Recovery Challenges

After eight weeks in hospital and two more in a Southport residential home, Ruth returned home with a care package. Initially, she relied on a wheelchair but began walking short distances with a stick. However, the onset of the pandemic paused her community physiotherapy services, leaving her heavily dependent on her husband for daily tasks.

Feeling uncertain about her future mobility and independence, Ruth decided to take charge of her recovery by reaching out to Burscough Neuro Physiotherapy.

Beginning Rehabilitation with Burscough Neuro Physiotherapy

Once Covid restrictions eased, our team visited Ruth at home in July 2020 for an initial assessment. Shortly after, she began weekly physiotherapy sessions. By November, Ruth started attending clinic-based sessions twice a week with Jo, her dedicated physiotherapist.

“The first noticeable change was the hands-on treatment. It was so much better than just being given exercises. The sessions focused on my leg and arm, and Jo recommended affordable equipment to support my recovery. This combination made a huge difference to my mobility, function, and independence.”

Ruth’s Remarkable Progress

Through determination and consistent effort, Ruth experienced significant improvements. Indoors, she now walks unaided, though she continues using a walking stick outdoors for uneven surfaces. Her right arm, once immobile, has regained 90% functionality, allowing her to regain many skills she once thought lost.

“My right arm and hand are nothing short of a miracle. With Jo’s help and persistence, I’ve made marvellous progress. While my dexterity isn’t perfect, starting from nothing to where I am now feels like a triumph.”

Advice for Stroke Survivors

“Don’t give up. Improvements can still happen months—or even years—after a stroke, despite what you may have been told. Listen to your physiotherapist and commit to the exercises—they really do work!”

Life Beyond Stroke Recovery

Fast forward to 2024, Ruth has reclaimed much of her former life. She’s driving, travelling, and even golfing again—a remarkable feat for someone who once feared she’d never swing a club. Recently, she and her husband travelled to Australia, New Zealand, and the USA, with Italy planned for later this year and South Africa in 2025.

We hope Ruth’s story inspires others facing similar challenges who may be on their own journey of recovery.
