Steve’s Story: Living with a Spinal Cord Injury

In 2016, Steve’s life changed dramatically when surgery to treat a spinal cord tumour resulted in a T9-10 spinal cord injury, leaving him unable to control his lower body and legs (paraplegic). Steve has been a long-term patient of ours, and it has been a privilege to support him on his rehabilitation journey. Below, Steve shares his own account of his experiences and the role neuro physiotherapy has played in his life.

“My name is Stephen Miller. I am 68 years old.

The year is 2016. The UK holds a referendum on leaving the EU. The last Land Rover Defender rolls off the production line after 68 years in production. Andy Murray wins Wimbledon for the second time. And I end up as a paraplegic due to a spinal tumour. Quite a memorable year!

I was in hospital for about four months, where I received excellent physiotherapy. Around 12 months after my injury, I discovered Burscough Neuro Physiotherapy. The team has helped me tremendously with my general wellbeing and keeping me as mobile and active as I can be. They’ve advised me on different aids and devices that make day-to-day living easier.

I enjoy my physio sessions. They can be hard work, but if you put the effort in, you’ll feel the benefit.

The Covid lockdowns meant I couldn’t attend physio for a long time. It was during that period I realised just how much my regular sessions were helping me.

It’s easy to let your injury or neurological condition become overwhelming, especially when you’re first diagnosed. It certainly overwhelmed me. One antidote to that feeling is physiotherapy. Give it a try—you’ll get great physio and have someone to talk to, outside of your immediate family and friends. Someone who truly understands your condition.

Despite my paraplegia, I haven’t let it stop me from doing the things I love. I still tinker with motorbikes and grow vegetables in my raised beds. I also learned to drive using hand controls, which has given me back my independence. I’ve even been on my first cruise!”

We are incredibly proud of Steve’s determination and positive attitude throughout his recovery. His story is a testament to resilience, and we hope it can offer inspiration and encouragement to others living with spinal cord injuries.
